Some Quick Wins for your Roof (courtesy of Reiter Roofing Inc):
1) Take a proactive approach to repairs and maintenance (essentially stay ahead of the game)
1) Sealing and coating the roof to protect against harmful UV rays that can cause damage
2) Installing vapor barriers that decrease moisture
3) Changing your roof from an asphalt material to a cooler, more reflective material like tile or PVC
4) Painting your roof in a light color or white to cool the surface
5) Apply periodic acrylic coatings to sustain your roof from thermal shock
7) Consider changing your roofing to a green material, like recycled tires, when the time comes to replace your roof.
Some other General Tips (courtesy of the government of Australia)
1) Keep your blinds closed, especially on north and west-facing windows or invest in some block-out curtains.
2) Block the heat: Shade windows, ceiling, and walls using external coverings, like blinds, awnings or large potted plants.
3) Cool wisely. Increasing your thermostat by just 1 degree C in warm weather can reduce the running cost of your appliance by about 10 per cent. If you’re looking to upgrade your air-conditioner, pick one with a high energy-star rating and do your research to ensure you choose the right type of air-conditioner for your home.
4) Close doors and seal gaps to rooms you aren’t using to keep cool air where you need it most and use draught excluders to ensure the cool air can’t escape. Evaporative air-conditioners will be more effective if you open some doors and windows to increase air flow through the home.
5) When it gets cooler in the evening you may want to go out or open your house up to cool your home naturally – just make sure you lock up overnight.
6) Sip cold drinks, apply a damp cloth to your neck and other points on your body, or have a cold shower to cool without needing to switch the air-conditioner on.
7) Wear light, loose clothing made of breathable fabrics like cotton, and fit your bed with cotton sheets.
8) Some lightbulbs produce a lot of heat, so switching to energy-saving bulbs can help cool your home and save heaps on energy costs.
